Advent 2022 - Devotion of the Day

Advent Devotion by Chidera Alim

Scripture Reading: Luke 12:28-38

“Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” Luke 12:34

Reflection: Have you ever been interested in updates from Guinea-Bissau? Or tried catching up on the country’s news? Maybe you didn’t even know Guinea-Bissau is a country, and one of the largest producers of cashew nuts in the world. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduces us to the Kingdom of God: a country many know little about! He challenges us to reconsider what’s truly valuable since where our treasure is, is where our hearts will be.

We make time for what we treasure. With our long- and short-term goals, it is normal to get caught up in the worries of life. Yet despite all our needs, Jesus says to seek His kingdom instead. Since “it is the Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom”, we can also trust that all good things are being added to us – according to God’s will and in His time. With every new day comes the opportunity to live for Christ and obey His word. When we fall short or feel insufficient, His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22, 23).

Christmas is a time with many distractions: but in the midst of this, Jesus reminds us to be consistently vigilant. Today is another opportunity to re-examine our lives and re-order our priorities. No matter what gifts lie under the Christmas tree, knowing Christ will always be the greatest treasure.

Question to ponder: How can I treasure Christ in new ways today?
